Our White Eagle Local Youth Showcase tomorrow was created to spotlight some established youth musicians, introduce some new student bands, and offer the chance for any local youth musicians to get involved in an ongoing music showcase at the fantastic, haunted, White Eagle Saloon!
We’ve focused several articles on youth this month: the world renowned School of Rock’s John Guffey talked about the importance of encouraging and showcasing youth musicians. We spoke with Cynthia O’Brien from the non-profit Youth Music Project in West Linn and with PROWUS President , Jen Tengs-Howard. We shared an editorial from Teri’s Tunes PDX, and focused on two of our guest musicians, Jack Mortensen Music and Michael Hermes. We took some time to meet our event’s co-host, Cruz Yates. Now, we introduce the brand new bands Black Sand, 4 Day Moon, and Pedestrian Death Gang! This showcase will be amazing, featuring music ranging from classical guitar and funk to grunge rock! Original tunes from original people, who are choosing to communicate creatively through their art! It’s inspiring, and we love it!
Black Sand is a self described “new kick-ass Alternative/Grunge band.” The band formed as a result of friendship formed at School of Rock Lake Oswego. I’ve seen performances by at least two of the members, and their fierce love for authentic 90’s Alternative rock and grunge is undeniable. You can check out a preview of their “dirty” music demos on their Bandcamp page. The band features Justin Clark and Zach Gordon on guitar and vocals, Jayson Hernandez on bass, and Jacob Gordon on drums.
4 Day Moon is an alternative pop/punk band, also from Portland’s West Side. I am familiar with Samuel Terrazzino, who was described by one of his School of Rock instructors as “quietly becoming the best guitar player here”! Samuel might be quiet in person, but he commands attention on stage! Samuel plays alongside his mates Emily Schneider (vocals), Rex Wolf (bass), and Sam Dunlap (drums). They’ve been playing together since May of 2015, but have released an album called Pretty Face = available on BandCamp.
And finally – Pedestrian Death Gang, taking on perhaps the most challenging genre for a young band to tackle…FUNK! This band is very exciting – though their last names are not listed, I believe I am very familiar with three or four of the members, and they are all outstanding musicians! Octavio (keys) is involved in several local youth bands as an expert keyboard player, Aidan (bass) has been performing on stage for almost a decade. Mia is one of my favorite young vocalists to watch – she’s a generous performer who holds nothing back!
We are extremely grateful to White Eagle Saloon, School of Rock Portland, PDX Spotlight, Sounds of PDX, Teri’s Tunes PDX, Vortex Music Magazine, Ole Latte Coffee, Stefanie Fisher Real Estate, Skate Tracks Radio, and Premier Motorsports for supporting us along this incredible journey! The next generation of musicians is here, and ready to establish their scene in our fair city! We hope to see everyone at the White Eagle tomorrow to see all six youth bands! Doors 11:30, show 12-2:30. Tickets $10, available online or at the door, all-ages, children under 5 are free. See you tomorrow!
